Question 27406: Tom is looking at his encyclopedia of math games. It has four unumbered cover pages and 256 interior pages number from 1 to 256. The left pages are even numbers and the right pages have odd numbers. Tom opens the book at random and adds up the six digits of the two pages in front of him. The sum is the greatest it can be. What are the two page numbers?
Answer by bmauger(101) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
It has to be past page 100, because the directions said six digits.
Anything in the 200's will have it's second number limited at 5.
So the first number must be 1.
Given that the smaller number has to be even (because it's on the right page, and western books are numbered from right to left) the largest even number you can have with the first digit 1 is 198. The next page is 199.
Left is page 198 & Right is page 199.
