Question 263619: I need help with this one question that I've always had problems with these rate of time problem.
Okay, so a plane is going to Chicago at 400 Kilometers/hour, and when they come back they're going 500 kilometers/hour...if the trip took 9 hours, how many kilometers did the plane fly all together? Thanks in advance and I hope you can answer as soon as possible!

You can put this solution on YOUR website! This is an RTD problem. Here is a table based on the given information
planes . . . . . . . .rate . . . . . . . time . . . . . . . .distance
to chi. . . . . . . . .400. . . . . . . . .T . . . . . . . . . 400T
from chi . . . . . . 500 . . . . . . . . 9 - T. . . . . . . 4500 - 500T
totals. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 . . . . . . . . . .
The distances must be equal, so we get
400T = 4500 - 500T
add 500T to get
900T = 4500
divide to get
T = 5
we now multiply 400*5 = 2000
it was a 2000 km trip
((((no offense to ur method of solving this but u forgot to add to get the total distance, 2000km is only half the distance for the round trip, total distance is 4000km for the whole trip. J.Barnum))))

I DID GUESS AND CHECK distance from AB = BA
so AB=X
Use the equation from the guy below me
400km x5hrs =2000km
500km x4hrs =2000km
5hrs+4hrs=9hrs
2000km+2000km=4000km
