You can put this solution on YOUR website!
k = Karen's age now
b = Mrs Blakely's age now
given:
(1) b+%2B+k+=+53
b+%2B+8+=+2%2A%28k+%2B+8%29
b+%2B+8+=+2k+%2B+16
(2) b+-+2k+=+8
Subtract (2) from (1)
(1) b+%2B+k+=+53
(2) -b+%2B+2k+=+-8
3k+=+45
k+=+15
and
b+=+53+-+k
b+=+53+-+15
b+=+38
Karen is 15 now
check:
b+%2B+8+=+2%2A%28k+%2B+8%29
38+%2B+8+=+2%2A%2815+%2B+8%29
46+=+2%2A23
46+=+46
OK

The sum of Mrs. Blakely's age and her daughter Karen's age is 53 years. In eight years, Mrs. Blakely will be twice as old as Karen. How old is Karen now?
-----------------------------
Equations:
B + K = 53
(B+8) = 2(K+8)
--------------------
Substitute for "B" and solve for "K".
---
(53-K + 8) = 2K + 16
61 - K = 2K + 16
3K = 45
K = 15 yrs old (Karen's age now)
