Question 151623: I need help. Algebra is not my fav subject. My son has homework and I have no idea how to do equivalent factions. so can someone help me.
Homework
Write two fractions that are equivalent to each fraction.
3/4
7/9
7/11
14/17
21/23
11/17
Maybe I'm just stupid but I can't figure it out to explain it to him.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I'll do the first two to get you started

# 1

3%2F4 Start with the first fraction.

%283%2A2%29%2F%284%2A2%29 Multiply both the numerator and denominator by 2 (any number will do)

6%2F8 Multiply 3 and 2 to get 6. Multiply 4 and 2 to get 8.

So 6%2F8 is equivalent to 3%2F4

7%2F9 Start with the second fraction.

%287%2A2%29%2F%289%2A2%29 Multiply both the numerator and denominator by 2 (any number will do)

14%2F18 Multiply 7 and 2 to get 14. Multiply 9 and 2 to get 18.

So 14%2F18 is equivalent to 7%2F9

Write two fractions that are equivalent to each fraction.
3/4
7/9
7/11
14/17
21/23
11/17
---------
I think equivalent means numerically equal. I don't know what else it could be.
All of these are reduced to their simplest form, so you can produce 2 equiv by multiplying NUM and DEN by 2 and by 3.
--------------
3/4 = 6/8 and 9/12
7/9 = 14/18 and 21/27
7/11 = 14/22 and 21/33
14/17 = 28/34 and 42/51
21/23 = 42/46 and 63/69
11/17 = 22/34 and 33/51 (and 1100/1700, any multiplier works)

Multiplying both the numerator and the denominator of any fraction by the same number always produces an equivalent fraction.
%283%2F4%29%282%2F2%29=6%2F8 for example.

Equivalent fractions: These are fractions that have exactly the same value but are different in appearance.
For example: 1%2F2 and 5%2F10 are equivalent fractions.
To show this, you can take the 5%2F10 and write the numerator (top) and the denominator (bottom) in terms of their factors, thus:
5%2F10+=+%281%2A5%29%2F%282%2A5%29 Now if you cancel the 5 in the top with the 5 in the bottom, you are left with:
%281%2Across%285%29%29%2F%282%2Across%285%29%29+=+1%2F2
So...1%2F2 and 5%2F10 are equivalent fractions.
Now back to your son's problem:
The first fraction is 3%2F4
To write an equivalent fraction, you simply can multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number, say 2, for instance, thus:
3%2F4+=+%282%2A3%29%2F%282%2A4%29 = 6%2F8
So, 3%2F4 and 6%2F8 are equaivalent fractions.
To get the second equaivalent fraction, you can multiply the numerator and the denominator by 3:
3%2F4+=+%283%2A3%29%2F%283%2A4%29=9%2F12
So 3%2F4, 6%2F8, and 9%2F12 are equivalent fractions.
You can follow this pattern for all the fractions on the list.
7%2F9+=+%282%2A7%29%2F%282%2A9%29 = 14%2F18 and...
7%2F9+=+%283%2A7%29%2F%283%2A9%29 = 21%2F27
Do you see the idea?
