You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A small city park consists of a rectangular lawn surrounded on all sides by a 330m^2 border of flowers 2.5m wide. find the area of the lawn if the entire park is 5m longer than it is wide.
---------------------------
Draw the picture of a rectangle inside a rectangle.
Entire Park dimensions:
Let width be x meters ; Length is "x+5" meters: Area = x(x+5) meters^2
---------------------
Inner lawn dimensions:
width = x-5 meters : length = x+5-5 = x meters: Area = x(x-5) meters^2
-------------------------
EQUATION:
Entire Park Area - Lawn Area = 330m^2
x(x+5) - x(x-5) = 330
5x+5x = 330
10x = 330
x = 33 meters
----------------------
Area of lawn = x(x-5) = 33*28 = 924 m^2
