A small city park consists of a rectangular lawn surrounded on all sides by a 330m^2 border of flowers 2.5m wide. find the area of the lawn if the entire park is 5m longer than it is wide. This question is from textbook Algebra Structure and Method
You can put this solution on YOUR website! A small city park consists of a rectangular lawn surrounded on all sides by a 330m^2 border of flowers 2.5m wide. find the area of the lawn if the entire park is 5m longer than it is wide.
---------------------------
Draw the picture of a rectangle inside a rectangle.
Entire Park dimensions:
Let width be x meters ; Length is "x+5" meters: Area = x(x+5) meters^2
---------------------
Inner lawn dimensions:
width = x-5 meters : length = x+5-5 = x meters: Area = x(x-5) meters^2
-------------------------
EQUATION:
Entire Park Area - Lawn Area = 330m^2
x(x+5) - x(x-5) = 330
5x+5x = 330
10x = 330
x = 33 meters
----------------------
Area of lawn = x(x-5) = 33*28 = 924 m^2
