Solve by using a system of two equations in two variables.
Gretchen paddles a canoe upstream at 3mi/h. Traveling downstream, she travels at 8mi/h. What is Gretchen's paddling rate in still water and what is the rate of the current?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x="Gretchen's paddling rate in still water", and let y=" rate of the current"

"Gretchen paddles a canoe upstream at 3mi/h" __ x-y=3

"Traveling downstream, she travels at 8mi/h" __ x+y=8

adding the equations will eliminate the y terms

solve for x, then substitute to find y
