: I have worked this problem and I'm not sure if I have done it correctly. Could someone please solve, so I can compare my work?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
multiplying the first eqn by 6 (to clear fractions) gives 5a-2b=36

substituting from the second eqn gives 5(-2b)-2b=36 __ -12b=36 __ b=-3

substituting again gives a+2(-3)=0 __ a=6

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Solve by using either the substitution method or the addition-or-subtraction method.
5a over 6 - b over 3 = 6
a + 2b = 0
------------------------
(5a/6) - (b/3) = 6
a + 2b = 0
------------------
a = -2b
Substitute to solve for "b"
(5*-2b/6) - (b/3) = 6
(-5b/3) - (b/3) = 6
(-6b/3) = 6
(-b/3) = 1
b = -3
-------------------
Substitute into a = -2b to get a = -2*-3=6
--------------------
Final Answer: a = 6, b = -3
