where "g" is the free fall acceleration  g = 32 ft/s^, t is the time.


From the formula,  t = sqrt%28%282%2A80%29%2Fg%29 = sqrt%28%282%2A80%29%2F32%29 = sqrt%285%29 = 2.236 seconds.



The Algebra student writes practically the same equation


    -16%2At%5E2 + 80 = 0.


He solves it this way


    16%2At%5E2 = 80

    t%5E2 = 80/16 = 5

    t = sqrt%285%29 = 2.236 seconds


and obtains the same ANSWER.
