Question 112537: A picture measures 5 inches by 7 inches. The picture is enlarged to a size of 15 inches by 21 inches.
A. What are the area and perimeter of the original picture?
B. What are the area and perimeter of the enlarged picture?
C. What is the percent of increase of the area of the enlarged picture? Found 2 solutions by checkley71, ilana:Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! A) AREA=5*7=35 IN^2
PERIMETER=2*5+2*7=10+14=24 INCHES.
B) AREA=15*21=315 IN^2.
PERIMETER=2*15+2*21=30+42=72 INCHES.
C) INCREASE IN AREA=315-35=280 IN^2.
OR (280-35)/35=7 OR 700% INCREASE IN AREA.
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Parts A and B are the same basic area and perimeter calculations, using the formulas A=l*w and P=2l+2w.
For part C you need to find the percent of increase of the area. If something is getting bigger, it must be at least 100% the original. If it doubles, it is 200. If it goes from, for example, 4 to 8, then you could do 8/4=2, and multiply by 100 to get an increase of 200%. Now you just need to use the numbers you were given to solve the problem.
