The height of the box will be 6 inches. If x is the side length of the original piece of cardboard, then the side length of the box will be x-12. So the volume of the box (length times width times height) will be
From here, you could blindly expand that expression to get
And then solve the problem by solving the equation
But you would be making a lot of extra work for yourself....
