You can put this solution on YOUR website!
ITEMS       QUANT            PRICE            COST

BOOKS                         $12 ea.

MAGAZINES                                        $16

TOTAL           12                             $112

Find the cost for the books by difference and use this to find the quantity of the books.

112-16=96
$96 for the books.

b, number of books,
12b=96
b=96%2F12

b=8
Eight books bought.

How many magazines?
12-8=4
Four magazines were bought.

In my school years we presented the solution in one line:

          The number of books = %28112-16%29%2F12 = 96%2F12 = 8.

The most advanced of us, young students, could notice that the info " . . . a total 12 books . . . " is EXCESSIVE and NON-NECESSARY

and is not used in the solution.
