Here is another way you can solve this problem. If you are good with mental arithmetic, it is much faster than the algebraic solution shown by the other tutor.

This alternate method is based on the fact that, since the distances are the same, the ratio of the speeds is the reciprocal of the ratio of the times.

The ratio of the two speeds is 55:40 = 11:8; so the ratio of times is 8:11.

4.75 hours is 19/4 hours; 19/4 divided in the ratio 8:11 is 8/4=2 hours and 11/4 hours.

Then the driving distance can be found using the time and rate for the trip in either direction:
55 mph times 2 hours = 110 miles
40 mph times 11/4 hours = 110 miles
