Andrew's share was 0.25 (1/4) of the total of Lionel's and Caroline's shares. So we can represent Andrew's share with x and the total of Lionel's and Caroline's shares with 4x. That makes the total amount 5x; so Andrew's share x is 1/5 of the total.

So Lionel's share was 1/3 of the total and Andrew's was 1/5 of the total. And we are told that Andrew's share was $60 less than Lionel's. So

%281%2F3%29x+-+%281%2F5%29x+=+60
%282%2F15%29x+=+60
x+=+60%2A%2815%2F2%29+=+30%2A15+=+450

The sum was $450; Lionel's 1/3 share was $150.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A = Andrew's amt
L = Lionel's amt
C = Caroline's amt
:
Andrew Lionel and caroline shared a sum of money.
A+B+C is the sum money
:
Andrew's share was 0.25 of the total amount received by Lionel and Caroline.
A = .25(L+C)
Multiply both sides by 4
4A = L + C
or
C = 4A - L
:
Lionel's share was 1/3 of the sum of money.
L = 1%2F3(A+L+C)
multiply both sides by 3
3L = (A+L+C)
3L = A + L + C
subtract L from both sides
2L = A + C
Replace C = (4A-L)
2L = A + 4A - L
2L = A + 4A - L
2L + L = 5A
3L = 5A
If andrew received 60 dollars less than Lionel,
A = L - 60
Replace A with (L-60) in the equation 3L = 5A
3L = 5(L-60)
3L = 5L - 300
3L - 5L = -300
-2L = -300
L = -300/-2
L = $150 is received by Lionel
