Question 1106089: The area of one field is 16 acres, and the area of the second field is 1 1/4 times bigger. A barn of wheat on the first field makes up 37 1/2 thousands of pounds per acre, and on the second 1 2/15 times as much per acre. You can put this solution on YOUR website! The area of one field is 16 acres, and the area of the second field is 1 1/4 times bigger. A barn of wheat on the first field makes up 37 1/2 thousands of pounds per acre, and on the second 1 2/15 times as much per acre. How much more wheat was gathered from the second field than from the first?
-------------
16 + 1.25*16 = 36 acres for the 2nd field
---
A barn of wheat on the first field makes up 37 1/2 thousands of pounds per acre = 16*37500 = 60000 pounds/acre
---
the second 1 2/15 times as much per acre. How much more wheat was gathered from the second field than from the first?
60000*(17/15) = 68000 pounds/acre for the 2nd field.
68000*36 = 2448000 pounds --- 2nd field
60000*16 = 960000 pounds --- 1st field
-------------------------------------------- Subtract
Difference = 1488000 pounds
I read the given information differently than the other tutor....
The first field has an area of 16 acres; the second has an area "1 1/4 times bigger".
Most people will interpret that incorrectly, saying the area of the second field is 16 time 1 1/4, which is 20. But the grammatically correct interpretation of "1 1/4 times bigger" is the size of the first field, plus 1 1/4 more times the size of the first field.
So the size of the second field in acres is
So the first field has an area of 16 acres and the second has an area of 36 acres.
The first field yields 37.5 thousand pounds of wheat per acre. The total amount of wheat from the first field is
The yield from the second filed is 1 2/15 times as much per acre as the first field. The yield in pounds per acre for the second field is .
So the total amount of wheat from the second field is
The difference in the total yield from the two fields is
The second field yielded 858 thousand pounds more of wheat.
