Question 1088420: A square piece of land was increased by 10 yards on each side, and contained 1.5 acres more. Determine dimensions.
1 acre = 4840 sq. yds.
Let x = side of square
x + 10 = side after increase.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
increase in area is (x+10)^2-x^2=x^2+20x+100-x^2=20x+100
That equals 4840*(1.5)=7260 yds^2
20x+100=7260 yds^2
x=358 yds^2.
The land is (358 yds)^2 and increased to (368 yds)^2
=26.480 acres initially, and 27.980 acres after.

Your equation is

%28x%2B10%29%2A%28x%2B10%29+-+x%5E2 = 1.5*4840.

It is EXACT TRANSLATION of the condition to the equation.

x is the length of the original square side in yards.
