The speed of a bicyclist is 10 mph faster than the speed of a walker. If the bicyclist travels 26 miles in the same amount of time that the walker travels 6 miles the speed of the bicyclist.
:
The last part of the last sentence does not make much sense, but I assume they are asking for the actual speed of the bicyclist
:
Let s = speed of the bicyclist
Then
(s-10) = speed of the walker
:
They say the times of the two are equal, we can make a simple time equation from that fact:
Time = Distance/speed
:
Bike time = Walking time
=
:
Cross multiply:
26(s-10) = 6s
26s - 260 = 6s
26s - 6s = +260
20s = 260
s = 260/20
s = 13 mph is the speed of the bike
:
:
Check our solution by confirming the times are equal:
Walker speed: 13 - 10 = 3 mph
6/3 = 2 hrs
26/13 = 2 hrs
