You'll have to use your imagination a bit. Imagine that the graph for C is being shifted horizontally to form those multiple variations (think of it like an animation). This is called a phase shift.

For D, the graph is being shifted along the other axis. The graph for D is being shifted up and down along the vertical y axis.
