A math problem states, evaluate 24/(6 • 2). Monica keys in 24 divided by 6 times 2 and assumes the answer of 8 displayed on her calculator is correct. However, the correct answer is 2.
What mistake did she make?
She divided 24 by 6 to get 4; she then multiplied 4*2 to get 8
-----------------------------
What should she have done differently?
Evaluate the contents of the parentheses to get 24/(12)
Then divide to get 2
-----------------------------
What process should she use to solve this type of problem?
PEMDAS:
Parentheses
Exponents
Multiply and Divide as they occur from left to right.

The grouping distinguishes what the numerator and denominator are. Monica ignored the grouping of 6 with 2, and then the order of operations went exactly as she key-entered: 24 divided by 6 was 4; and 4 became multiplied by 2 was 8. Monica must understand the parenthesized expression must be evaluated separately, or here, must be done FIRST.
24 is divided both by the 6 AND by the 2.
24 DIVIDED BY 6;
That result DIVIDED BY 2;
Final answer is 2.
