Question 1025947: Jason is shopping at a store for a shirt. He has a coupon that will reduce the original price of the shirt by $2. A 4% sales tax will be added to the reduced price. Which inequality represents all of the possible original prices, p, of shirts that will cost less than $20 after the coupon and tax are applied?
A. 0.83
B. O.83 with 3 repeating
C. 1.2
D. 1.2 with 2 repeating
I'm a 7th grade math tutor & I've tried drawing a tape diagram, solving this with a negative coefficient due to the fact that the originAl price of the shirt doesn't make sense to be less than any of the above values.
Thanks in advance

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
i solved this as follows.

let p = the original price of the shirt.

then p-2 = the sale price.

the tax would therefore be .04 * (p-2).

the total cost is therefore (p-2) + .04 * (p-2).

if this has to be less than 20, then you get:

(p-2) + .04 * (p-2) < 20

simplify this to get p - 2 + .04 * p - .04 * 2 < 20

simplify further to get p - 2 + .04 * p - .08 < 20

combine like terms to get 1.04 * p - 2.08 < 20

solve for p to get p < (20 + 2.08) / 1.04

this results in p < 21.23076923.

i tested this out and it makes sense.

looking at the selections, however, i can't make heads or tails out of any of them.

any value of p less than 21.23076923 will satisfy the inequality.

p, however, would have to be greater than or equal to 2, otherwise the sale price would be negative.

i did a search on the internet for the question and this is what i came up with.

this came from the following link.

i calculated the solution to be selection b in this test.
