Question 507117: Smedley has just drawn two rectangles. The length of the first rectangle is 4cm more than the length of the second. The width of the first is 9cm. The width of the second is 6cm. If the area of the first rectangle is 96 square cm greater than the area of the second, find the length of each.
I tried: I drew rectangles. And my equation was [9(x+4)]+96=6x
9x+36+96=6x
9x+132=6x
132=-3x
Divide by 3.
X=-44
First of all it can't be negative, second... It doesn't work. I checked it and it doesn't work out.

Question 507086: Mandy, Callie, and Kate were running a race of 1500 meters. Mandy won. At the moment when Mandy crossed the finish line, she was 300 meters ahead of Callie and 420 meters ahead of Kate. If Callie and kate kept running at the same rates as they have run so far, how many meters ahead of Kate will Callie be when she crosses the finish line? HINT: answer isn't 120.
Okay so basically i put the the numbers at which Kate and Callie have gone over the total number of meters(1500) by simplifying and finding a common denominator(25) i next tried to divide 1500 by 25 to divide the path they ran and I got 60. Which basically led me back to where I started.
Thankyou!

Question 507628: I have been trying to calculate this problem for a few days and keep getting a negative answer.
"A rectangular garden has a perimeter of 24 yards. Fencing across the length costs $3 per yard and along the width $2 per yard. The total cost of the fencing is $62. Find the length and width of the rectangle"
So I set up the equation as follows:
X= length
Y= Width
2x+2y=24
3x+2y=62
The way I set it up may be my problem.
