Question 1200078: An open box with base 14 cm by 18 cm and height 9 cm (external dimensions) is
constructed with all four sides and the bottom 2 cm thick. What is the total surface area of this box in square cm?
Dear Respected Tutor,
It may occur to you that the solution to this problem is widely available online. (There's an Algebra.com one too, but I am highly doubtful in its correctness) I, however, fail to grasp how/why a 2cm thick base implies every wall is 2 cm. Yes, I have never seen a box with a thicker base, but what if there's some styrofoam on the bottom? In short, why can we assume each wall is 2cm thick?
Thank you lots!
