Question 132347: I have a word problem I'd like to check please. On a baseball diamond the bases are 90 ft apart. What is the distance from home plate to second base in a straight line?
I tried using the pythagorean formula and squared both sides of 90 and added them together to get 16200. The square root from that would be 127.279, and that is what I think the distance would be. Can you tell me if I'm not right & point me in the right direction?

Question 134085: Hi ,

I was hoping you could help me with two more question. I have tried to find a formula but I can't and I'm wasting too much time. My class is tomorrow evening.

1. Determine two numbers whose sum is 15 and the sum of its square roots is 137. I know the answer is 11 and 4 but what formula do I use.

7. The perimeter of a rectangle is 20 inches and its area is 24 inches squared. Determine the lengths of its sides. I know that the sides are 6" and 4" but I need to show my work. I just used logic to find the numbers.

8. The perimeter of a rectangle es 24cm and its area is 32 cm squared. Find the lengths of its sides. Again I know that the answer is 8cm and 4cm but what is the formula?

I really appreciate the help

Thanks,
Anne

Question 136441: I can't seem to solve this problem that should be easy. I'm blocked and need to figure out how to solve it.
A person is building a storage area with 10 short walls of x length and 2 long walls of y length. (This looks like a long row of rectangles with y being the total length of all of them together) The total wall length will be 500ft.
For the first part of the problem I was supposed to find a formula for area in terms of x so I used A=xy which turned into x=A/y
Then I set up the equation to start finding then lengths of x and y. So I set up 10x + 2y = 500 and solved for x which is x=50 - 1/5y
So what now? I have a complete mental block and need to know where to go or what I have done wrong to get myself confused up to now. Thanks.
