Question 99529: I think I have this problem, but would like someone to make sure.
the volume of a rectangular box is 105 cubic inches. if the top is 6 inches by 3.5 inches, what is the height? I must show algebraic steps to get the answer.
I have 6 x 3.5 = 21 So the top is 21 inches
105 - 21 = 84
84 (divided by) 3 = 28
so the height is 28 inches.

Does that look right?????
Thanks, Judi

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Remember, the volume of a box is

V=L%2Aw%2Ah

Since the top is 6 by 3.5 inches, we know the length is 6 inches and the width is 3.5 inches

105=6%2A%283.5%29%2Ah Plug in L=6 and w=3.5, and the given volume V=105

105=21h Multiply

5=h Divide both sides by 21

So the height is h=5

ok the formula for the volume of a rectangle box is length times width times height. or
%28L%29%28W%29%28H%29=Volume
Ok so lets plug in the given information.
%286%29%283.5%29%28H%29=105
first multiply 6 times 3.5
%2821%29%28H%29=105
now divide both sides by 21
%2821H%29%2F21=105%2F21
H=5
and so H = 5 inches
To check the answer just use the formula %28L%29%28W%29%28H%29=Volume
and plug in all the values so
%286%29%283.5%29%285%29=105
%2821%29%285%29=105
105=105
