The length of each side of a square was increased by 3 inches, so the perimeter is now 40 inches. What was the original length of each side of the square?
------------
Let original side length be "s" inches
Then original perimeter = 4s inches
-----
New permeter = 4(s+3) = 4s + 12
------
Equation:
4s + 12 = 40
4s = 28
s = 7 inches
