Question 938579: an observer is lying on the ground 200 feet from the spot directly below the balloon watching the balloon rise. If the angle of elevation from the observer to the balloon is 30 degrees, how high is the balloon?

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Tangent is the opposite side over the adjacent side. In this case, the side adjacent to the 30 degree angle is 200 feet, the side opposite is height of the balloon, and the angle is the elevation or 30 degrees. So:
tan(30)=height/200
Solving for height:
height=200tan(30)
tan(30 degrees)=0.5774 (approx) so:
height=(200 ft) x (0.5774)= 115.48 feet
