Question 884839: A computer manufacturing company would like to come up with a new laptop
computer such that its monitor is 80 square inches smaller than the present ones.
Suppose the length of the monitor of the larger computer is 5 inches longer than
its width and the area of the smaller computer is 70 square inches. What are the
dimensions of the monitor of the larger computer?

Examining the description gives nothing to relate dimension of the small and large monitors.

Try assigning variables.
Small:
x and y width and length
Large:
w and L width and length

Develop expressions and equations:
highlight_green%28xy=wL-80%29; highlight_green%28L=w%2B5%29; highlight_green%28xy=70%29.

The two area equations give something to solve.
wL-80=xy=70
wL-80=70
wL=70%2B80
wL=150-----The area for the current large monitor.

Substitute the formula transcribed for L into that area equation.
w%28w%2B5%29=150
w%5E2%2B5w-150=0
%28w%2B15%29%28w-10%29=0
The meaningful value is highlight%28w=10%29.
highlight%28L=15%29.
Recall as assigned, w and L are for the larger monitor.

A computer manufacturing company would like to come up with a new laptop
computer such that its monitor is 80 square inches smaller than the present ones.
Suppose the length of the monitor of the larger computer is 5 inches longer than
its width and the area of the smaller computer is 70 square inches. What are the
dimensions of the monitor of the larger computer?

Let width of larger monitor be W
Then length of larger monitor = W + 5
Area of larger monitor = W(W + 5), or W%5E2+%2B+5W
Since area of smaller monitor is 70 sq”, and since this area is 80 sq” smaller
than the larger monitor, then area of larger monitor = 150 (70 + 80) sq"
Now, we can say that: W%5E2+%2B+5W+=+150_______W%5E2+%2B+5W+-+150+=+0
(W - 10)(W + 15) = 0
Width of larger monitor, or W = highlight_green%28highlight_green%2810%29%29” OR W = - 15 (ignore)
Length of larger monitor: 10 + 5, or highlight_green%28highlight_green%2815%29%29
