Question 797808: Hello,
Could you please help me with this problem? Please show me step by step instructions for solving this problem so I will understand it.
The problem is:
Find the area of the walkway (36 inches wide) that will be installed around a circular jacuzzi with a diameter of 6 feet. Round your intermediate steps and answer to two decimals.
I would appreciate your help with this question. Need answer asap.
Thank you
Robin

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Robin,
It may not seem like it, but your teacher gave you a pretty straightforward problem to solve. To solve for the area of a circular walkway around a circular jacuzzi pool, imagine this problem as figuring out the area of a big circle and subtracting the area of a smaller circle inside of it. Email me and I will send you a drawing to go along with the explanation below.
...
The formula for the area (A) of a circle is A = pi x r^2 (r squared), where pi can be approximated to be 3.14 and r = radius of the circle. The radius r, is 1/2 the diameter, d.
...
The big circle = the radius of the pool (3') + the width of the walkway (3')
The small circle = pool radius of 3' (based upon 6' diameter given in problem)
...
Compute the area of the big circle (jacuzzi + walkway):
...
A = pi x (3 + 3)^2
A = 3.14 x 6^2
A = 3.14 x 36
A = 113.10
...
Compute the area of the inner circle (jacuzzi only):
...
A = pi x (3)^2
A = 3.14 x 9
A = 28.27
...
Subtract the smaller circle from the larger circle to compute the area of circular walkway:
...
Area of walkway = 113.10 - 28.27 = 84.83 sq ft.
