The total width of the photo remains the same, either 5 inches or 7 inches. You made no change to the photo. You just added a border frame around it. The FRAME will have a width, either 5%2B2%2A1 inch or 7%2B2%2A1 inch, depending on which direction you wanted as taken to be width.

If you added 1 on to each side of the 5 inch width,
the new width, including the frame, would be:

5 + 1 + 1
= 7 inches {added 1 inch onto each side of the original width}
