Since the longer part is 3 times longer,
3x= length of the longer part (in meters)
The lengths should add to 3 meters, so
x%2B3x=3 is our equation
x%2B3x=3 --> 4x=3 --> x=3%2F4
The shorter part is 3%2F4 meter long.
We could say its length is 0.75 meter or 75 centimeters.
