You can put this solution on YOUR website! A rectangular lawn is twice as long as it is wide.
It has a path 1 metre wide all around it.
The length of the perimeter of the outside of the path is 48 metres.
What is the width of the lawn?
Give your answer correct to the nearest centimetre.
:
"A rectangular lawn is twice as long as it is wide."
L = 2W
:
" It has a path 1 metre wide all around it."
L+2 = overall length (including the path)
W+2 = over width
:
"The length of the perimeter of the outside of the path is 48 metres."
2(L+2) + 2(W+2) = 48
Simplify, divide eq by 2
(L+2) + (W+2) = 24
L + W + 4 = 24
L + W = 24 - 4
L + W = 20
Replace L with 2W (from the first statement)
2W + W = 20
3W = 20
W = 20/3
W = 6 meter which is 6 m 67 cm is the width of the lawn
:
:
See if that checks out, using decimals.
L: 2(6.67) = 13.34 + 2 = 15.34 overall length
W: 6.66 + 2 = 8.66 overall width
the perimeter of the path
2(15.34) + 2(8.66) =
30.68 + 17.32 = 48
