A rectangular room has an area of 101.500000 square feet and a perimeter of 43 feet. What are the dimensions of the room? Find the exact solution.
I know that area = lw and perimeter = 2(l + w) and I know that this will end up being a quadratic equation. Not sure how to plug everything in and solve.

OK, definitions:
Let x=width and y=length

area: xy=101.5

perimeter: 2(x+y) = 43
--> x+y = 43/2
--> y = 21.5 - x

so sub this into the area equation to give x(21.5 - x) = 101.5
--> 21.5x+-+x%5E2+-+101.5+=+0
--> -+x%5E2+%2B+21.5x+-+101.5+=+0
--> x%5E2+-+21.5x+%2B+101.5+=+0

factorise this or use the quadratic formula :-)
