Question 470314: This was my original question and it was answered but in what order do you add or does it matter?
"A boy earned $10 more than twice as much as his sister. Together they earned $70. How much did each earn?"
"lets say he paid x for them
then
x-0.85=4.65 solve for x, so add 0.85 to each side
x=5.5
so he paid $5.50 for them"

Hi,
question calls for expressing the amounts each earned in terms of a variable
"A boy earned $10 more than twice as much as his sister...
Let x and (2x+$10) represent the amount the girl and boy made respectively
Question states*** Together they earned $70.
x + (2x+$10) = $70
Solving for x
3x = $60
x = $20, the amount the girl earned. the boy earned $50 (2*$20+$10)
CHECKING our Answer***
$20 + $50 = $70
