You can put this solution on YOUR website!
J = Jason's age now
F = Freddies age now
Five years ago, Jason was three times as old as Freddy.
J - 5 = Jason's age five years ago
F - 5 = Freddies age five years ago
J - 5 = 3 * (F - 5)
When Freddy was four years old, Jason was four times Freddy's age.
This says, when Freddie was four, Jason was sixteen.
The difference in their ages will always be 12 years.
J - F = 12
J = F + 12
substitute this into other equation
(F + 12) - 5 = 3 * (F - 5)
F + 7 = 3F - 15
solve for F
2F = 7 + 15
2F = 22
F = 11
This is Freddies age now
substitute
J = F + 12
J = 11 + 12
J = 23
This is Jason's age now
Check:
Jason is 12 years older, so when Freddie was 4, Jason would have been 16
which was 4 times Freddies age
J - 5 = 3 * (F - 5)
23 - 5 = 3 * (11 - 5)
18 = 3 * 6
So, 5 years ago, Jason was 3 times Freddies age, and the difference in
their ages is 12, that is (18 - 6) as it should be.

I can get the answer using logic, but I am not sure about the math.

When Freddy was 4, Jason was 4 x 4 or 16

Five years ago Freddy = 6
Jason = 18

Today Freddy = 6 + 5 = 11
Jason = 18 + 5 = 23

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Five eyars ago Jason was 3(x-5)
And Freddy was y-5
ANd when Freddy was 4, Jason was 16
SO:
Jason's age(x) = y-16-4
y-5=3x-15
y-5=3(y-12)-15
y-5=3y-36-15
-2y=-46
y=23
Jason is:
x=23-12
x=11
Hence, Jason is 11 years old and Freddy is 23 years old.
