Question 26512: A woman wants to put a ladder against the wall of her house and climb up to fix the gutter. The gutter is 14 ft above the ground. Unfortunatly, there is an 8 ft high retaining wall standing 3 ft away from her house. The ladder can't be placed between the retaining wall and the house, so it must be placed on the outside of the retaining wall. The ladder will go over the retaining wall (it can touch it) and then up to the roof. How long a ladder does she need?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
|-
|---
|14ft-
||------
||8ft----- y
||----------
||---3ft------
||______x_______

Solve for x
14%2Fx=8%2F3
8x=14(3)
8x=42
x=5.25

Use Pythorean Theorem to solve for y
14%5E2%2B5.25%5E2=y%5E2
y%5E2=223.5625
y=14.95200655--->15 (rounded)

Hence, she needs 15ft long ladder.
