One method of solving this problem is to get everything in inches. Then find the area of the outer rectangle and subtract the area of the inner rectangle. This gives you the area of the rectangular path that you are wanting to find. Next, you need to find out how many 6 in by 6in squares are needed to give you that square footage. Well how many square feet does one 6x6in square give you? 36 sq ft. So divide your square footage by 36 and this will give you the number of tiles needed.
