Question 182264: The width of a rectangular painting is two thirds its length. If the perimeter is 60 inches, then what are the length and width?
I know that the formula is P= L2 + W2 but I am dyslexic and the fraction in here is throwing me. I would include what I have done so far but it doesn't even make sense to me. Found 2 solutions by checkley77, rapaljer:Answer by checkley77(12844) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! W=2/3*L
2L+2(2/3*L)=60
2L+4L/3=60
(3*2L+4L)/3=60
(6L+4L)/3=60
10L=60*3
10L=180
L=180/10
L=18 IN. IS THE LENGTH
W=(2*18)/3
W=36/3
W=12 IS IN. THE WIDTH.
PROOF:
2*18+2*12=60
36+24=60
60=60
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Start with letting x = the quantity at the end of the first sentence, which in this case is the length. Don't worry about the fraction. We'll handle that in the easiest possible way LATER on!! Don't let the problem intimidate you. It probably isn't as bad as you think it is.
Now, let x = length. .
2W + 2L = Perimeter
Now, if you don't like fractions (and I don't know anyone who really does!), multiply both sides of the equation times 3: inches = Length
Now, to find the width, take 2/3 of 18, which is 12 inches.
The check is to see if the perimeter is 60 inches.
2W + 2L = P
2*12 + 2*18= 60
24+36= 60 It checks!!!
