Hard to explain where to get the answer from, but I'll try.

Lets start by using a rectangle. We know perimeter is:
2W+%2B+2L+=+12
And area is:
L%2AW+=+6
Some quick algebra gets you 2, 1.5. So a rectangle with sides 2 and 1.5.

For the next, let's assume a right triangle.
%281%2F2%29%2Ab%2Ah+=+6
a+%2B+b+%2B+sqrt%28a%5E2%2Bb%5E2%29+=+12
Not as easy, but conveniently I know that there is a 3-4-5 triangle, which adds to 12, and %281%2F2%29%2A3%2A4+=+6.
So, a 3-4-5 right triangle.
