Question 161947: A photo is 3 inches longer than it is wide. A 2-inch border is placed around the photo making the total area of the photo and border 108 square inches. What are the dimensions of the photo?
I know the length and the width are are 12 and 9. I assume that I would subtract 2 from both of these in for the answer. I just don't know how to write it in the form of an equation.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
actually, subtract 4 (2 at each end)

dimensions of photo __ x and x+3

with border __ x+4 and x+7

(x+4)(x+7)=108 __ x^2+11x-80=0 __ factoring __ (x+16)(x-5)=0

x+16=0 __ x=-16 __ negative value not realistic

x-5=0 __ x=5 __ substituting __ x+3=8
