Question 126805: A piece of tin, y=11 inches on a side, is to have four equal squares cut from it's corners. If the edges are then to be folded up to make a box with a floor area of 25 square inches, find the depth of the box.
This problem has me stumped :( please help :-) Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! the box is square, so if the floor area is 25 sq.in.; the edge of the floor (bottom) is sqrt(25) or 5 in.
the original piece was 11 in. on a side, so the missing 6 in. (11-5) is used in the depth of the box
__ 3 in. on each side - so the box is 3 in. deep
