Question 1193973: A rectangular garden measures 23ft by 41ft. Surrounding (and bordering) the garden is a path 2ft wide. Find the area of this path. Be sure to include the correct unit in your answer.
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
For each dimension, we'll add on 4 feet because we're really adding on two copies of 2 ft each.
The 23 updates to 23+4 = 27
The 41 updates to 41+4 = 45
When including the uniform path, the rectangle is 27 ft by 45 ft.
The larger rectangle has area 27*45 = 1215 sq ft.
The original rectangle has area 23*41 = 943 sq ft.
The difference of these areas is exactly the area of the path only.
1215-943 = 272
The solution from the other tutor is fine; here is a different path to the answer.
Along each of the four edges of the garden is a rectangular section of the path 2 feet wide. The total area of those four rectangular sections is 46+82+46+82 = 256 square feet.
Then there is a 2ft by 2ft section of the path in each of the four corners, for an additional 4*4 - 16 square feet.
