Simple Proportion!

----------------------------------------------------
5 cups of sugar for every 12 litres of milk.
----------------------------------------------------

%285%2F12%29%28cups_sugar%2Fliters_milk%29

---------------------------------------------------------------
How much sugar do you need is you are using 15 litres of milk?
--------------------------------------------------------------

A proportion is the equality of ratios.

x, the amount of sugar, in cups
%285%2F12%29%28cups%2Fliters%29=%28x%2F15%29%28cups%2Fliters%29

5%2F12=x%2F15-------------------Solve this for x.

Hi
a recipe calls for 5 cups of sugar for every 12 litres of milk.
How much sugar "x" do you need is you are using 15 litres of milk

Set Up Proportion: Cross Multiply to Solve
 %285c%29%2F%2812L%29+=+x%2F%2815L%29 ⇒ x = 5c*15L/12L = 6.25 cups of sugar

Both responses you have received so far use the same algebraic approach, using a proportion.

I personally find it easier and faster to solve the problem informally.

The change from 12L of milk to 15L is an increase by a factor of 15/12 = 5/4, so you need to increase the amount of sugar by a factor of 5/4.

ANSWER: (5/4)*5 = 25/4 = 6.25 cups of sugar for 15L of milk
