Question 112333: Could you please provide me with some assistance with this word problem.
A square support unit in a television is made with a side measuring 3 centimeters. A new model is being designed for the upcoming year and will have a larger square with a side measuring 3.2 centimeters. By how much will the area of the square be increased?
I know that the answer is not .2 centimeters, it is too easy. Would the formula be: A= 3.14(r)^2
I appreciate any help with this one. Thank, Jessie.

First find the area of the older television

A=s%5E2 Start with the area of a square


A=%283%29%5E2=3%2A3=9 Plug in s=3 and square it

So the area of the older television is 9 sq cm


Now find the area of the newer model

A=%283.2%29%5E2=%283.2%29%2A%283.2%29=10.24 Follow the same procedure


So the area of the TV increased from 9 to 10.24 sq cm. Now simply subtract 9 from 10.24 to get


10.24-9=1.24

So the area of the television increased 1.24 sq cm

YOU ARE DESCRIBING A SQUARE BUT USING A CIRCLE FORMULA.
IF THE SQUARE HAS A SIDE OF 3 CM THEN THE AREA IS:
S^2=AREA OR:
3^2=9 CM^2
IF THE NEW SIDE IS 3.2 THEN:
3.2^2=10.24 CM^2
THUS THE INCREASE IS:
10.24-9=1.24 CM^2 INCREASE IN AREA.
