Question 1050137: New carpeting is being installed in a rectangular office. In order to know how much carpeting to buy, the area of the office must be calculated. The perimeter of the office is 40 feet and the ratio of its length by its width is 3:2. What is the area (in square feet) of the office?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Ratio 3:2 and perimeter of 40:
Perimeter = 2L+2W
and given the ratio of 3:2
2(3x)+2(2x) = 40
6x+4x = 40
10x = 40
x = 4
3(4) = 12 is the length and 2(4) = 8 is the width
------------------------------------
Check
(2*12)+(2*8) = 24+16 = 40 Correct.

If length is x and width is y, then y%2Fx=2%2F3.

Perimeter information means 2x%2B2y=40.

Simplfied as system%28x%2By=20%2Cy=2x%2F3%29.

Hi
.
Let x represent the constant of proportionality
L = 3x, w = 2x
2L + 2w = P
2(3x) + 2(2x) = 40ft
10x = 40ft
x = 4ft
w = 8ft, L = 12ft
A = Lw
A = (12ft)(8ft) = 96ft^2
