Question 640593: Samantha smith went into a store and spent half her money and then spent $20 more. Samantha then went into a second store and spent half her remaining money and then spent $20 more. After spending money in the second store, Samantha had no money left. How much money did she have when she went into the first store? Answer by solver91311(24713) (Show Source):
Since she didn't have anything left after the last $20, and just before she spent that last $20 she spent half of what she had, that last $20 must have also been half of what she had when she walked into the second store. So, when she entered the second store she had $40. Then just before she spent the extra $20 at the first store she had $60, which was half of what she had at the start. $120.
