Question 289710: Could you please help me solve this word problem?
Thank you, Cynthia
The value of a share of I. J. Solar can be represented by V(x) = x2 – 28x + 13, where x is the number of months after January 2004. What is the lowest value V(x) will reach, and when did that occur?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

You want the vertex of the parabola. When it occurs is the x-coordinate,

So 14 months after January 2004 which would be the end of February 2006.

The amount is the value of the function when x is 14, so:

However, if you care to do the arithmetic, you will note that this is a negative number. Stock prices are never negative, they get very near zero and then become worthless. So what you really need is the zero of this function with the smallest positive value.

The roots of this equation are irrational numbers but one is just a bit smaller than 1/2 and the other is slightly in excess of 27. So the real answer is that the lowest value (0) will be achieved roughly 14 or 15 DAYS after time 0.
