Question 210377: A computer store sold a total of 300 items last month. The store sold six times as many hard drives as they did CD-ROM drives, and half as many floppy drives as hard drives. Based on this information, how may of each item were sold? Found 2 solutions by Earlsdon, MathTherapy:Answer by Earlsdon(6294) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let H = number of hard drives.
C = number of CD-ROM drives.
F = number of floppy drives.
H+C+F = 300 and...
C =6H "The store sold 6 times as many hard drives (6H) as they did CD-ROM drives (C)."
F = H/2 "...and half as many floppy drives as hard drives."
Now you can modify the first equation based on the above data:
H+6H+H/2 = 300 Multiply through by 2.
2H+12H+H = 600 Combine like-terms.
15H = 600 Divide both sides by 15.
H = 40 and...
C = 6H
C = 6(40)
C = 240 and...
F = H/2
F = 40/2
F = 20
40 hard drives, 240 CD-ROM-drives, and 20 floppy drives were sold.
Check:
40+240+20 = 300
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let amount of CD-Rom drives sold be C
Then since they sold 6 times as many hard drives as CD-Rom drives then they sold of 6C hard drives
Also, since they sold half as many floppy drives as they did hard drives, then they sold of 6C, or 3C floppy drives
Since they sold 300 drives, then: C + 6C + 3C = 300
10C = 300
C = 30
This means that CD-Rom drives were sold.
As a result, they sold (6 * 30) hard drives, and (3 * 30) floppy drives.
