You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let n= the number of nickels he found
Let d= the number of dimes he found
Let q= the number of quarters he found
given:
(1) d+=+n+%2B+3
(2) q+=+2d
(3) 5n+%2B+10d+%2B+25q+=+505 (this is in pennies)
Substitute (1) and (2) in (3)
(3) 5n+%2B+10d+%2B+25q+=+505
(3) 5n+%2B+10%2A%28n+%2B+3%29+%2B+25%2A2d+=+505
(3) 5n+%2B+10n+%2B+30+%2B+50d+=+505
(3) 15n+%2B+50d+=+475
Substitute (1) in (3)
(3) 15n+%2B+50%2A%28n+%2B+3%29+=+475
(3) 15n+%2B+50n+%2B+150+=+475
(3) 65n+=+325
(3) n+=+5
Plug this back into (1)
(1) d+=+n+%2B+3
(1) d+=+5+%2B+3
(1) d+=+8
And from (2)
(2) q+=+2d
(2) q+=+16
Sam found 5 nickels, 8 dimes, and 16 quarters
check:
(1) d+=+n+%2B+3
8+=+5+%2B+3
8+=+8
(2) q+=+2d
16+=+2%2A8
16+=+16
(3) 5n+%2B+10d+%2B+25q+=+505
5%2A5+%2B+10%2A8+%2B+25%2A16+=+505
25+%2B+80+%2B+400+=+505
505+=+505
OK

Sam found a N nickels, D dimes, and Q quarters in his room. He found three more
dimes than nickels (D = N+3), but twice as many quarters as dimes (Q=2D). The
total value of the coins was $5.05 (5N + 10D + 25Q = 505). How many coins of
each type did Sam find? Please show me the steps you took to get your answer;

Edwin's solution:

system%28D+=+N%2B3%2C+Q=2D%2C+5N%2B10D%2B25Q=505%29

Can you solve that system? If not post again, asking how.

Answer: 5 Nickels, 8 Dimes, 16 Quarters
