A company must decide which of two delivery services it will contract with. During a recent trial period, the company shipped numerous packages with each service and kept track of how often deliveries did not arrive on time.
Compare the two services' overall percentage of late deliveries.
Overall, Company A is late _of the time. Company B is late _ of the time.
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! overall, company A has 13 late regular deliveries and 15 late overnight deliveries for a total of 28.
divide that by 700 total deliveries = 28/700 = .04 = 4%.
overall, company B has 2 late regular deliveries and 28 late overnight deliveries for a total of 30.
divide that by 700 total deliveries = 30/700 = .0429 = 4.29%.
4% for company A and 4.29% for company B are your answers if you are just looking for overall later percent.
those figures would indicate that company A is more reliable overall.
the results are, however, skewed by the fact that you are not comparing similar numbers of deliveries for regular and for overnight.
if you compare percent late for regular and percent late for overnight separately, you will find that company A is more reliable in both categories.
for regular, company A late percent = 13/500 = 2.6% while company B late percent = 2/200 = 1% indicating company B is more reliable.
for overnight, company A late percent = 15/200 = 7.5% while company B late percent = 28/500 = 5.6% indicating company B is more reliable.
the solution you were asked to obtain, however, is:
Overall, Company A is late 4% of the time and Company B is late 4.29% of the time.
