You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = his monthly salary
1/5 of which is spent on rent
1/8 of it is spent on the credit card bill
1/5 + 1/8 = 8/40 + 5/40 = 13/40
He spent 13/40 of his monthly salary on rent and the credit card bill
That leaves 27/40 of the monthly salary left over
Think of a pizza with 40 slices. 13 of them are eaten, so 40-13 = 27 are left.
(27/40)*x = 1431
27x = 1431*40
27x = 57240
x = 57240/27
x = 2120
Answer: $2120

You can put this solution on YOUR website! .
Let assume that his salary is 40x.
Then he spent = 8x and = 5x,
or, in total, 8x+ 5x = 13x.
So, he has left 40x - 13x = 27x.
It gives an equation
27x = 1431,
and we find x = 1431/27 = 53.
Hence, his salary is 40*53 = 2120 dollars. ANSWER
Solved.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Let x = Paul's monthly salary
x - x/5 - x/8 = 1431
Multiply all terms by 40 to eliminate denominator
40x - 8x -5x = 57,240
27x = 57,240
x = 2,120
Answer
Paul's monthly salary is $2,120.
