You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.

Let x be the amount Karen had at first.

Then the amount Michael had was x%2F3.

The condition says

    x - 9 = x%2F3 + 5.

Multiply both sides by 3

    3x - 27 = x + 15

Simplify

   3x - x = 15 + 27

   2x     = 42

    x     = 42/2 = 21.

ANSWER. Originally, Karen had 21 dollar.

Solved.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +x+ = amount that Michael at beginning
+3x+ = amount Karen had at beginning
----------------------
+3x+-+9+ = amount Karen has later
+x+%2B+5+ = amount Michael has later
----------------------
given:
+3x+-+9+=+x+%2B+5+
+2x+=+14+
+x+=+7+
and
+3x+=+21+
---------------------
Karen had $21 at first
---------------------------
check:
+3x+-+9+=+x+%2B+5+
+21+-+9+=+7+%2B+5+
+12+=+12+
OK
